Halloween Hoax

If you’re a pit bull lover, and you’re on facebook, you’ve probably seen a letter circulating the web that warns pit bull owners to keep their dogs inside on Halloween because someone has arbitrarily declared the Holiday Kill a Pit Bull Day.  According to snopes.com, it was a hoax that began a few years ago, nevertheless it has people worried about walking their dogs on Halloween Night. Someone may see the “hoax” letter and think to him/herself that it’s actually a good idea….

The reality is that there are dangers on Halloween Night that typically transcend those of ordinary nights (vandalism, theft, and sexual assault) especially in neighborhoods where crime is typically low. We are well aware that the holiday presents opportunities for criminals as well as challenges to our safety. With the help of local law enforcement and community watch groups, scrutiny of criminal acts and security against criminal behavior is always enhanced. By no means does that indicate that all risks are removed, but to believe that there is some network of pit bull killers out on the prowl on Halloween is a bit silly.

Don’t allow a hoax, or even real hate groups, to deter you from experiencing the wonder of the holiday. Being pit bull owners, we have developed a thicker skin and a sharper focus. It is completely out of character for us to run and hide because of some nonsensical letter that has been posted ad infinitum on social medias. We always advise people to protect their pit bulls as much as humanly possible no matter what the situation, and always be prepared to encounter realistic threats in a sane manner. However, when we dwell on worst case scenarios that are fictitious, we lose sight of what really harms our bullies — Breed Specific Legislation, discrimination, politics against pit bulls, illegal dog fighting, animal theft, over breeding, lack of awareness, lack of adoption, etc.

These are the issues we should be sharing like wild fire on facebook and twitter.

If you’re still uncomfortable, that’s fine, just make sure you throw your pibbles a nice halloween party indoors! 🙂
